In the spring of 1939, noted American composers John Cage and Lou Harrison presented a series of percussion concerts at the Cornish School in Seattle. By January of the following year the two young composers had embarked upon a Northwest tour – a bold experiment that composer Henry Cowell famously dubbed “Drums Along the Pacific.” Cornish celebrates the seventieth anniversary of these landmark percussion concerts with a special four-day festival devoted to the music of John Cage, Lou Harrison and their mentor Henry Cowell, March 26 – 29.

The Theater Department continues its longstanding tradition of community collaboration this semester with a production of Night Flight. Originally written by Antoine St. Exupéry, Night Flight has been adapted into a one-act operetta by Book-It Repertory Theater’s founding co-artistic director, Myra Platt. Platt, who is also directing the Cornish production, plans to revise the piece after work-shopping the material with Cornish students, to be programmed as part of the larger Book-It season. The production will run February 19-22 at the Raisbeck Performance Hall, Ned & Kayla Skinner Theater, and features a score by Music Department alumnus Joshua Kohl (’96).
Design faculty member Claudia Meyer-Newman was selected to present at Icograda Design Week at VCUQatar, an American university in Qatar. Claudia’s presentation is titled “Collaborative Learning Communities: 360 degrees of relevance.” According to Claudia, “developing learning environments that support collaboration, shared authorship, collective rather than the individual voice, has the potential to foster design solutions that are meaningful and lasting.”
