In October, Cornish Theater students were treated to a guest appearance by Tony-award winning writer Brian Yorkey. Brian and his collaborator, composer Tom Kitt, won a 2009 Tony for Best Score of a Musical for the Broadway production of Next to Normal. The show received 11 nominations and won 2 other awards, for Best Orchestrations and Best Actress. Next to Normal’s Original Cast Recording has also been at the top of the Billboard charts and received a record number of downloads on iTunes.
In a recent juried design Student Portfolio Competition, Cornish Design senior Dong Il Lee was singled out for a prestigious Honorable Mention by the International Interior Design Association’s Northern Pacific Chapter, for his presentation of an office design combining motion graphics and sound.
SEATTLE, WA – Cornish College of the Arts announces an expansion of the college’s music program to encompass a new emphasis on early music and period instrument performance practices of European Renaissance and Baroque music.
Newly appointed Cornish faculty member, lutenist, and internationally renowned early music expert Stephen Stubbs will provide musical direction for the College’s expanded early music program. Mr. Stubbs also serves as co-director of the Boston Early Music Festival and is the artistic director of Pacific Operaworks.
“We’re very fortunate to have someone of Stephen’s breadth of knowledge, artistry, and international reputation join our faculty,” said Cornish Music Department Chair Kent Devereaux. “I’m especially excited by the caliber of the faculty that Stephen and I have been able to attract as part of this new program. Over the past decade Seattle has been blessed with an influx of superb early music artists, and we’re proud to commit to building a truly world-class early music program at Cornish over the next few years.”

Cornish Music Faculty Jovino Santos Neto has been nominated for a 2009 Latin Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Album. Jovino was nominated for his work with pianist Weber Iago on the album Live at Caramoor, featuring recordings from a 2007 performance at the Caramoor Jazz Festival in Katonah, New York.
This fall, Cornish opened two converted hotel facilities to provide housing near the downtown campus in Seattle’s Denny Triangle neighborhood. School is now in full swing, and students living in these new facilities have officially gotten their first taste of residential college life.
