Cornish College of the Arts presents GIMME: From Inspiration to Appropriation. The group show, curated by Suzanne Beal, explores how contemporary artists borrow objects, icons, images and sound from their surroundings, which reflect the culture in which they live, and reinterpret them in the works they produce.
Featured artists include Brad Adkins, Gretchen Bennett, Leo Saul Berk, Sean Duffy, Victoria Haven, Tivon Rice, Samantha Scherer, Robert Yoder, Dan Webb (ART ’91).
Every year the Stranger honors a filmmaker, a writer, a visual artist, a theater artist, and an arts organization who are making startling, original work. This year Cornish Theater Alumni Mandie O’Connell (TH ’04) and Ryan Mitchell (TH ’04) were honored with a 2008 Stranger Genius Award for their experimental theater company Implied Violence.
Internationally-acclaimed dance icon Donald McKayle will visit the Cornish College of the Arts Dance Department, conducting a guest artist residency in September 2008. With his assistant Amy Sennett, McKayle will stage his masterpiece Songs of the Disinherited on Cornish Dance Theater and teach master classes to department students. The September residency will include a lecture-demonstration devoted to McKayle’s artistic life, historical impact and legacy and an open rehearsal of Songs of the Disinherited, both open to the public.
Cornish Alumnus Brendan Fraser (TH ’90) was featured in two blockbuster releases this past summer, 3-D Journey to the Center of the Earth, and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
