$310,000 Raised at Gala for the Cornish Scholarship Fund

Cornish College of the Arts raised over $310,000.00 for the Cornish Scholarship Fund at its annual event, Cornish Celebrates An Evening of the Arts on Sunday, November 5, 2006. The Cornish Scholarship Fund provides much-needed financial support for emerging artists in the visual and performing arts, allowing students to pursue their education without incurring a crushing financial burden.

Guests at the event were invited to 'Raise the Paddle' to provide gifts to the fund at $25,000, $10,000, $5,000, $2,500, $1,000, $500, $250 and $100 levels. Thanks to a very generous longtime trustee, all gifts of $1000 and above were matched dollar for dollar. Joseph Brotherton, also a longtime trustee of the College and a co-chair of the event, and his wife Maureen, pledged $25,000. Brotherton expressed his delight in being able to support gifted, emerging artists.

This year marked the 35th anniversary of the Cornish College of the Arts' Jazz Program. President Sergei P. Tschernisch recognized faculty member Jim Knapp for his role in establishing the program, for his passion for teaching and his own illustrious career as a musician.

Jim Wilke, host of Jazz Northwest on KPLU 88.5 FM emceed the evening which featured Cornish faculty, alumni and students throughout the evening. They were joined by special guest performer, the internationally-acclaimed singer, composer and pianist Ann Hampton Callaway, artist-in-residence in the Music Department. The Event Honorary Committee included Quincy Jones, Musician, Paul G. Allen, Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, Dave Dederer, Presidents of the United States of America, John Dimitriou, Dimitriou's Jazz Alley, Bill Frisell, Musician, John Gilbreath, Earshot Jazz Festival and Scott Brown, Director of Roosevelt High School Band. Sponsors included Vulcan, Charles Simonyi Fund for Arts and Sciences, Davis Wright Tremaine, Bank of America, Heartland, Lane Powell, Kibble & Prentice, Hedges Cellars, Seattle Magazine, KPLU 88.5 FM NPR, Mayflower Park Hotel, Sherman Clay and Whole Foods.
