Birds and Whistles was created by Cornish art student Kyle Wendt in 2000. He solicited the submissions, letter-press printed the cover and hand-sewed the binding. With the assistance of a few students, Wendt kept the publication going each year until he graduated in 2003. After this time, Cornish design students Diana Riesenberger and Adrienne Smitke picked it up until they graduated in 2005.
Jazz improviser, classical pianist, Dadaist, protégé of Dvorak and Debussy and dancehall habitué, Erwin Schulhoff was a rising star in the cultural world of 1920’s Europe. Among the first to integrate jazz and neoclassical composition, his work was nearly erased by the Holocaust and the Iron Curtain.
The Erwin Schulhoff Festival includes two weekends of special performances and a panel discussion that draws on Schulhoff’s wide ranging repertory for piano, chamber ensembles and voice, much of which will be new for Seattle audiences. A Schulhoff Festival highlight is the world premier performance of Tempo of Recollection, a new stage performance integrating Schulhoff’s compositions and his historical context, actors, musicians, dancers and innovative stage design.
The annual Scores of Sound event presents four days and nights of non-stop student performances, including jazz ensembles and vocalists, new music, classical vocalists, music theatre, electronic music, instrumental soloists, gamelan music and classical chamber ensembles. Featured artists for this year’s event include ensemble-in-residence Saint Helens String Quartet.
Cornish College of the Arts raised over $310,000.00 for the Cornish Scholarship Fund at its annual event, Cornish Celebrates An Evening of the Arts on Sunday, November 5, 2006. The Cornish Scholarship Fund provides much-needed financial support for emerging artists in the visual and performing arts, allowing students to pursue their education without incurring a crushing financial burden.
