Chris Stover, D.M.A.

Adjunct Instructor, Trombone, Cuban Music

Chris Stover is an innovative trombonist and composer specializing in Cuban and Brazilian music and creative improvisation. He has toured internationally with Pablo Moses, Apple Gabriel, Quasinada, Jumbalassy, and the Harry James Orchestra, as well as his own solo and group projects. He also performs with Sonando, Orchestra Zarabanda, Grupo Ashé, the Jim Knapp Orchestra, the Elspeth Savani Quintet, Wayne Horvitz, and Affinity, and his own quartet, as well as the groups More Zero and Duas Opiñioes. He appears on over fifty recordings. As a musicologist, Stover has done extensive research on Cecil Taylor, Luciano Berio, phenomenological approaches to music analysis, and the traditional and popular music of Cuba and Brazil. Stover holds a bachelor degree from the Eastman School of Music. He received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Washington where he is also a Ph.D. candidate in Music Theory. He is currently the managing editor of Perspectives of New Music.
