A seasoned performer, Beth Winter received her B.A. in Music, with a classical voice performance emphasis from the University of Maryland, then performed in major venues in New York and in numerous festivals on the eastern seaboard for nine years before relocating to Seattle over a decade ago. She has performed with Kirk Lightsey, Norman Simmons, Kenny Werner, Fred Hirsh and George Cables, and received hands–on coaching from Sarah Vaughn, Abbey Lincoln, Shelia Jordan, and Jay Clayton. In Seattle, Winter has collaborated with Larry Fuller, Jessica Williams, Hans Teuber, Jeff Johnson, and Phil Sparks. Her CD, Winter Duo, a collection of jazz standards with Dawn Clement on piano, was released in 2004.
Winter is currently working on a new CD project with her quintet to be recorded in both Seattle and New York, and supported in part with a grant from the Jordan Foundation. In addition to her studio and classroom teaching at Cornish, she coordinates workshops and showcases acting as facilitator and mentor to many emerging jazz vocalists. She also participates in an outreach program in the Washington public schools with the renowned 493 Reunion Band formerly led by Floyd Standifer and Buddy Cattlett, and funded by a cultural enrichment grant from the Earshot Jazz Society.
