Born in Hollywood, Adam Stern began his musical studies at age five. He studied conducting at the California Institute of the Arts and received his MFA at the age of 21, the youngest music student ever to receive a Masters degree from CalArts. In 1992 Stern moved to Seattle and has been active as a conductor, composer and pianist ever since. He served under Maestro Gerard Schwarz as Assistant Conductor of the Seattle Symphony from 1992 to 1996, and as Associate Conductor from 1996 to 2001. He also served as Music Director of the Northwest Chamber Orchestra from 1994 to 2000. He currently serves as Music Director and Conductor of the Seattle Philharmonic and the Port Angeles Symphony. Stern is particularly devoted to the performance of neglected symphonic repertoire, and has presented numerous Seattle, Northwest and West Coast premieres of the music of Copland, Vaughan Williams, Holst, Goffredo Petrassi, Richard Danielpour, Aurelio de la Vega, Gerhard Samuel, James Tenney, Roque Cordero, Richard Peaslee and Oscar Levant, among many others.
