Assistant/Associate Professor—Jazz Performance

Pay Grade: Assistant or Associate Professor ranking commensurate with education and experience. Full-time. $46,017 - 47,075

Purpose

Teach beginning through advanced jazz instrumental performance students in a four-year program leading to a Bachelor of Music degree.

Responsibilities

1. Teach courses in the music curriculum as appropriate including:

  • Jazz ensembles, improvisation, and jazz repertoire courses
  • Electives and other coursework within area of performance specialization

2. Provide individual instruction to jazz instrumental performance students

3. Participate in fulltime faculty institutional service, including:

  • Attending departmental faculty meetings and retreats
  • Participating in departmental and College-wide committees
  • Attending and evaluating music student recitals
  • Participating in departmental admission auditions

4. Perform and record on a regular basis so as to maintain a national and/or international profile as a practicing jazz artist

Minimum Qualifications

  • An actively performing jazz artist whose primary instrument is trumpet, trombone, saxophone, or other brass or woodwind instrument (French horn, clarinet, etc.)
  • Master’s degree and an active, established career; OR equivalent experience as an artist of national or international stature with a distinguished body of work
  • At least three years of substantial teaching experience, preferably in a college setting
  • Ability to work closely and compatibly with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff
  • Ability to represent the college well at a national level

Preferred Qualifications

  • An artist with an individual and compelling artistic voice able to serve as an effective mentor and role model to aspiring young musicians
  • Strong knowledge of jazz theory; knowledge of classical theory helpful.
  • Broad interests and exposure to many types of music, alone and in combination with the other arts (dance, theater, film, etc.).
