Curriculum

All baccalaureate degree candidates must complete 30 credits in the Humanities and Sciences. Twelve of these credits are earned through the Integrated Studies Program in the student’s first year. After the first year, students take courses in various disciplines, including literature, history, arts criticism and theory, and the social and physical sciences.

To ensure breadth of study, while also allowing for some flexibility in course selection, students are required to distribute 18 of their Humanities and Sciences credits across three categories of study: Memory, Reason, and Imagination. These categories were derived from the personal library of Thomas Jefferson, which was organized on this classification system. To complete this basic requirement, six credits must be completed in each category. For the remaining 12 credits, students can elect to take any Humanities and Sciences courses. Examples of courses that fulfill the Memory, Reason, and Imagination requirements are:

Once matriculated into a degree program at Cornish, Humanities and Sciences requirements may not be completed at another institution. The Humanities and Sciences Program does not award credit for prior learning experience.
