Renee Agatsuma received her BS in Zoology with a minor in Chemistry from the University of Washington in 2001, then her MA in Science Education from Teachers College in 2004. She taught high school Biology, Physical Science, and Genetics in both New York and Seattle, and is a National Board Certified Science Teacher (AYA Science) since 2009. She will be receiving her MS in Genetic Epidemiology from the University of Washington and will be continuing as a PhD student in Public Health Genetics. Her current research involves Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s Disease, and she is interested in how people understand genes and risk. Renee started teaching at Cornish in Spring 2013 in a class combining genomics, ethics, and public health that focused on the new frontier in genetic information and how it might influence society. She believes that scientific literacy is important for responsible citizenship and that artists have a unique way of communicating the complexity, and applicability of scientific concepts.
