Michael Shilling

Michael Shilling received his MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Michigan, where he was on the faculty of the English Department and the Sweetland Center for Writing. In addition to teaching at Cornish, he also teaches in the English Department at Seattle University and at The Richard Hugo House. Michael is the author of Rock Bottom, which Back Bay Books/Little, Brown and Company published in 2009. In 2011, the book was adapted to the stage as a musical by the Landless Theater Company in Washington DC, and is being developed for a second adaptation for 2014. His short stories have appeared in The Sun, Fugue, and Other Voices, and he has written arts criticism for The Stranger and MSN Music. Michael is the recipient of a GAP grant from Artist Trust, as well as a fellowship from the MacDowell Colony. His creative and research interests entail noir, black comedy, and varieties of gothic experience, and he plays the drums in a soul/R&B cover band called The Flat Five.
