Erica Howard
Assistant Professor
Erica Akiko Howard received a B.A. in Chemistry & Environmental Studies from Cornell University and an M.S. in Land Resources & Forestry from University of Wisconsin–Madison. She then earned a graduate certificate in “Integrating Research, Teaching, & Learning” while doing post-masters studies at UW-Madison. Erica teaches sciences and interdisciplinary environmental studies, including courses such as “Seeing Green in the Emerald City,” “Food, Environment & Public Health,” and “Urban Ecology.” Through her teaching and as a Master Urban Naturalist at Seattle’s Seward Park, she is passionate about helping people become more ecologically literate and skilled in science, technology, and quantitative thinking. Active in the arts as well as the sciences, she danced with Kanopy Dance Company in Madison, WI from 2002-2006, where she studied Graham and post-modern dance and began choreographing. She has also studied other dance, movement, and musical disciplines and has worked with community and campus music and theater productions as a performer, musical director, producer, and recently as “science dramaturg.” She is interested in exploring ways to fuse arts and sciences to deepen our understanding and appreciation of the environment we live in.
