Director of Campus Safety & Security

Reports to: Chief Operations Officer
Supervises: Assistant Security Manager, Security & Campus Services Specialist, Security Officers and Shuttle Van Driver
Pay Grade: F, Exempt; Full-time; $50,000 - 55,000 DOE; Fabulous Benefits
Purpose:
Directs a comprehensive program of campus security as well as parking management, evening shuttle, and loss prevention. Administers safety and emergency preparedness initiatives campus-wide.
Responsibilities:
1. Manages the day-to-day operations of the campus security program including:
- providing training in appropriate security methods
- creating and overseeing standard security protocols
- creating staff schedules and approving time cards
- building a cohesive team of service-oriented professionals within a student-centered culture
2. Ensures a secure and safe environment for all students, faculty, staff and visitors by
- establishing security methods and implementing prudent risk management strategies
- working to support all campus programs relating to welfare and safety
- responding to all security concerns and emergency situations
- conducting orientations for the College community with respect to security and safety policies and procedures
- referring all disciplinary issues to appropriate personnel
- monitoring use of Cornish property
- providing interface with Seattle Police Department and the Metropolitan Improvement District personnel
- conducting thorough investigations
- providing on-call coverage in the event of emergency
- staying abreast of current industry trends and standards
3. Oversees the technical applications relevant to safety and security systems including:
- administering alarm monitoring and door locking systems
- setting access levels for key card entry systems
- issuing ID cards to employees, students and guests
- assisting in the overall use of technology to help make the best use of existing Security Department systems
4. Oversees campus service operations for the College, which consist of:
- processing incoming and outgoing U.S. Postal Service mail, delivery packages, and campus mail
- supplying copy paper
- making bank deposits as needed
- maintaining first aid kits and fire extinguishers campus-wide
5. Oversees the College's Parking Management Plan and evening shuttle operation
- managing all aspects of parking management, including ticketing and collections
- overseeing nighttime shuttle system including the hiring and supervision of the necessary drivers
- maintaining college vehicles as needed
6. Administers safety and emergency preparedness initiatives campus-wide by:
- coordinating floor warden program
- coordinating established safety trainings and drills for college personnel
- serving as a member of the Safety Committee
- in conjunction with Facilities Department identifies safety deficiencies and develops appropriate corrective measures
7. Plans, requests and administers an operating budget for assigned functions.
8. Confers regularly with COO, Facilities Director and other college personnel to plan and coordinate activities/systems, exchange information, etc. to improve processes related to safety and security.
9. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree plus five years progressively more responsible supervisory experience in security or comparable field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Proven ability to work closely and compatibly with a diverse student body, faculty, staff and other colleagues
- Proficiently knowledgeable about security systems
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Proven leadership skills
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Excellent analytical skills
- Ability to be on call and respond to emergency situations during off hours
- Certified in CPR and First Aid
- Valid Washington State Driver's License and safe driving record
- Must pass background check
- Must be able to lift 30 pounds and stand/walk for long periods of time
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in an urban college environment
- Experience working in an arts organization or not-for-profit setting
- Police work experience
