Assistant/Associate Professor of Rhetoric/Composition

Pay Grade: Assistant or Associate Professor ranking commensurate with education and experience
Purpose:
To teach composition and coordinate the Writing Center. (In the future, this division of workload could shift when the College develops a Teaching and Learning Center with a director.) To assist in the design of a curriculum appropriate to aspiring artists within a liberal studies framework and participate in the interview and hire of adjuncts.
Responsibilities:
- Teaches four courses a year in composition and coordinates the Writing Center (a 2/3 – 1/3 time appointment).
- In relation to the Writing Center, supervises work study student(s), provides tutoring, runs workshops, maintains and develops instructional resources, and consults with faculty about writing pedagogy.
- Provides assistance in curriculum planning and design as well as in the hire of adjuncts, particularly in the writing and first-year program curriculum.
- Participates in core faculty institutional service, including:
- attending departmental faculty meetings and retreats
- participating in departmental committees
- participating in one major campus-wide committee
Minimum Qualifications
- MA in Rhetoric/Composition or PhD in English with demonstrated coursework and/or training in contemporary composition theory and practice
- Substantial writing center experience
- At least two years of undergraduate teaching experience
- Experience with computer-assisted instruction
- An interest in working for a College with a primary commitment to teaching
- An interest in interdisciplinary intersections within the humanities and sciences
- Proven ability to work closely and compatibly with a diverse student body, faculty, staff and other colleagues
- Ability to demonstrate a conceptual understanding of general education and the liberal arts
- The ability to contribute to curriculum planning in the general liberal arts
- An interest in the arts
- A commitment to multicultural perspectives and inquiry
- A sense of humor
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in Rhetoric/Composition
- Experience in writing center administration
- Knowledge of and/or experience working with developmental writers, ESL students or students with learning disabilities
- Experience working with faculty to support best practices in the assignment and teaching of writing
- Knowledge of pedagogical theory and practice
