Web Developer
Department: Office of Communications
Reports To: Director of Communications
Supervises: Student interns, work study students
Pay Grade: D, Non-Exempt; 30 hours/week
Hiring Range: $16.50 - $17.50/hour, DOE; Fabulous benefit package
Purpose: Under the direction of the Director of Communications, the Web Developer assists in the management of the College’s website and supports the implementation of the Strategic Communications Plan by developing effective web applications for internal and external audiences.
Responsibilities
- Assists the Director of Communications with forecasting the web budget and makes recommendations on technology acquisitions.
- Develops web software applications to deliver and process web pages with dynamic content or forms using any of the following programming languages: ASP, ASP.NET, and PHP. Creates secure-server applications as needed.
- Creates and administers MSSQL and MySQL databases to be used with the above applications.
- Follows consistent business and work practices as established by the Lead Web Designer to ensure smooth workflow.
- Follows practices to ensure website(s) comply with Section 508 guidelines (government requirement for any organization receiving government funding to follow accessibility standards)
- Develops and administers online community-building tools, including discussion forums and weblogs
- - manages user accounts and passwords for students and faculty accessing secure areas of the website
- - trains and provides technical advice to community moderators for discussion forums and weblogs
- Administers the functional operation of the website by
- - managing log files, compiling server statistics and developing reports for web site stakeholders
- - managing IIS permissions and FTP user accounts
- - managing bandwidth usage and disk space for the website, setting up Scheduled Tasks to automate some functions of the website
- Maintains appropriate documentation and administrative procedures within areas of responsibility.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associates degree plus one year experience in web development, web program management, or combination of equivalent education and experience
- Fluency in implementing web technologies including XHTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP, and SQL
- Knowledge of ASP, ASP.NET (programming) and familiarity with MySQL and MSSQL (database development)
- Familiarity with IIS, security protocols, platform and browser-specific issues.
- Commitment to stay abreast of web technologies, standards, and usability principles and acquire additional skills

- Ability to work on special projects independently, and work effectively within a team
- Ability to work with a diverse campus population and adapt to the communication and working styles of Communication clients
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Experience in a higher education, not-for-profit, or arts environment
