Verification Process 2008 - 2009

The Office of Financial Aid will notify you if you have been selected for review in the process called Verification. What is Verification and why was I selected? Approximately one-third of all student aid applications are selected for verification by the Department of Education

To complete the process, provide the following documentation to the Office of Financial Aid:

  1. Signed and dated Verification Worksheet with all sections completed.
  2. Signed and dated copies of 2007 US tax returns, W2's, and all applicable schedules for:
    • yourself
    • your parents, if you are a dependent student
    • your spouse, if you were married at the time of filing your FAFSA
Please check the Who Needs to File 2008-2009 chart.
  3. Signed and dated copies (sign and date anywhere on the copies) of all untaxed benefit documents. For a list of all possible untaxed benefits - see FAFSA Worksheets A, B and C.
  4. If you or one of the relevant persons in number 3 above will not be filing a 2007 US tax return, please complete the Non-filer Statement. Additionally, non-filers may be asked to submit to the Office of Financial Aid in August, a copy of their Free Tax Transcript 2007 (see directions below).
NOTE: The Office of Financial Aid may request additional information regarding your support in 2007. If required by the Office of Financial Aid, please complete the Resource Form.

How to Request a Free Tax Transcript by Telephone or by Mail

From the IRS website:

Most needs for tax return information can be met with a computer print of your return information. This is known as a transcript. A Return transcript will show all original information from the return as filed. If you need to have all changes and charges and credits you can request a tax Account transcript. Transcripts are provided free of charge. These transcripts may be acceptable substitutes for an actual copy of the return by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services and lending agencies for student loans and mortgages.
You can obtain a transcript by calling 800.829.1040 or by completing and mailing Form 4506-T (PDF), Request for Transcript of Tax Return, to the address listed in the instructions to request all types of transcript verification of non-filing, and wage/income information.
Transcripts will be mailed directly to you, and should be received within two weeks after the IRS gets your request. Transcripts can be mailed to a third party if you specify this on Form 4506-T, however, you must sign and date the form giving your consent for the disclosure.
