Summer at Cornish 2013 is in full swing, and the halls are once again abuzz with student activity. The four hundred and eighty two pre-college artists have come to Seattle from nearby, out in the greater Seattle neighborhoods, various U.S. states, and from as far away as Luxembourg, Mexico, South Korea, Japan, and the Netherlands. This year marks our largest group yet.

It could be that they came for the credits this year; for the first time, Cornish is offering pre-college classes that can be taken for two credits each, alongside the usual workshops and intensives. It seems that past participants are also coming back to school here during the academic year, evidenced by the 25 new students who returned as Freshmen last Fall after being part of a Summer at Cornish program.

Leading the students in housing are Program Assistants Sean Sullivan (AR ’15), Juan Franco (AR ’14), Jessica Parmley (DE ’15), and Rebecca Strohl (TH ’15). For students in the residence halls (again, the largest group to date), some exciting activities await, including a visit with the Degenerate Art Ensemble, the Intiman Theater Festival, a Velocity Dance Center performance, and trips to the SAM and Sculpture Park.

All of the students have the chance to connect over art. “These disciplines, no matter where they’re from, are their common ground” says Summer Program Director Alison Staplin.
