Merit Awards and Exhibition 2014: The Art Department’s top students vied for annual Merit Award scholarships; those selected recently exhibited their work in Cornish’s |_ Gallery.
To have a chance at having your work shown at the Art Department’s annual Merit Awards Exhibition, you have to be more than a promising artist; you must be a good student. These past few weeks, 27 continuing students — freshmen, sophomores, and juniors — were selected by art faculty to take part in the exhibition. The show featured work in a wide variety of media, from animation to anaglyph photography. Each of the awardees will also receive a scholarship to support their academic success at Cornish.
The criteria for receiving a Merit Award are rigorous. Applicants must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.4 or greater. That’s the “good student” part. Then there is the “promising artist” part: applicants must submit five examples of their work to demonstrate artistic facility. The art faculty then weighs the quality of the art work, personal growth and academic achievement which the Merit Committee will then use to select the final awardees.
Merit Scholars for 2013-14 in no significant order are:
Madisen Schorno, Aaron Swanson, Jeanette Jones, Esther Doss , John Marc Powell (Coulliette), Lauren Koo, Derrick Lee, Taylor Bednarz, LaraAnn Sabih, Michelle Domanowski …
