In Monsoon season, when it rains it pours: fresh from winning RuPaul’s Drag Race and playing off-Broadway, Jinkx stars in Hairspray in Concert.
Hairspray in Concert at the 5th Avenue Theatre, June 20-23: it’s going to be a short run, one that the hardest-working drag queen in show business has somehow shoehorned into her busy schedule. Cornish’ own Jinkx Monsoon — aka Jerick Hoffer (TH ’10) — has in a matter of months won RuPaul’s Drag Race and headlined an off-Broadway production of The Vaudevillians, the hysterical two-hander he developed with fellow grad Richard Andriessen (TH ‘10). Added to this, Jinkx has been making appearances all over the country.
This year is the 10th anniversary of the musical Hairspray moving from the 5th Avenue Theatre to Broadway, the first world premiere at the theater to make the move. “It won the Tony Award for Best Musical,” broadwayworld.com reports, “and launched the Theatre’s unprecedented track record for sending new works to New York.”
The special “in concert” performance of Hairspray celebrates this, promising not only the infamous ministrations of the redoubtable Miss Monsoon, but the well known musical skills of the Seattle Men’s Chorus. Dennis Coleman, Artistic Director for Seattle Men’s Chorus “With Jinkx, 200 talented gay men and the full resources of The 5th Avenue Theatre at our disposal, this is going to be an unforgettable event.”
Hairspray in Concert runs Thursday through Sunday, June 20-23 at the 5th Avenue Theatre,1308 5th Avenue, Seattle. There are 8 pm shows on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and a 7:30 pm show on Sunday June 23. There are 2 pm matinees Saturday and Sunday.
