Cornish-Amazon Music Series Kicks Off

Van Vorst Plaza in South Lake Union is the scene of free music all summer long, courtesy of Amazon and Cornish Department of Music.

What happens when you mix the campus of an Internet giant with the campus of an arts college? Most times, it’s hard to say, but this summer, you get a free, open-air music series. The Cornish@Amazon concert series will run every Thursday from June 20-Sept 5, with the exception of July 4, coinciding with the South Lake Union farmer’s market. The performances feature a diverse selection of music featuring Cornish students, faculty and recent alumni: from Latin to contemporary jazz, rock n’ roll to tango.

MORE INFO.

The first performance took place on Van Vorst Plaza on June 20 and featured Jovino Santos Neto Quinteto. Neto is a professor in the Cornish music department. The day, unfortunately also featured rain, but enough umbrellas were provided that concert goers were able to keep dry while they enjoyed the music and their lunches.

Following Neto’s quintet on series Thursdays, starting on June 27 with the Chuck Deardorf Quartet, are A Cedar Suede, Jake Sele Trio, Courtney Fortune Jazz Trio, Gregg Belisle-Chi Trio, Matt Singler Quartet, Jimmie Herrod Trio, Cornish Tango Ensemble, Quasar and the Encanto Quartetto.

Given the close proximity of Amazon’s new corporate campus to Cornish’s emerging college campus it makes sense that both organizations would begin to explore the potential for mutually beneficial partnerships. What better way than through music? As the second largest music retailer in the world, Amazon plays and important role in the music industry; just as importantly, music played a crucial role in the history of Amazon, as the second product category launched after books.

Cornish @ Amazon, Thursdays from June 20 to September 5 (except July 4). From 12-1 pm on Van Vorst Plaza, 410 Terry Ave N. Free and open to the public.
