Influential Typographer Ed Fella to Speak at Cornish

Cornish is honored to announce that acclaimed artist, educator, and graphic designer Edward Fella will be speaking in March to our design students and faculty. Fella practiced professionally as a commercial artist in Detroit for 30 years before receiving an MFA in Design from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1987. He has since devoted his time to teaching at the California Institute for the Arts and his own unique self-published work which has appeared in many design publications and anthologies. His recently published book "Edward Fella: Letters on America, Photographs and Lettering" gives insight into his idiosyncratic world by combining and juxtaposing examples of his unique hand lettering with his photographs of found vernacular lettering. Projects included; reports on city environmental progress, city sustainability plans for the future, and programs and practices that invites public participation. Each student was challenged to select a relevant topic, and develop compelling design strategies that would inspire, motivate, and compel the general public to participate in progressive sustainability practices.

Poster - Robynne Raye Design Department Faculty Exhibition
Thursday, Nov 4 - Thursday, Dec 2
Cornish College Gallery, 1st floor

The Design Department had its Biennial Faculty Exhibition this past autumn. The exhibition was launched amidst a fractious Presidential debate and the deepening U.S. war in Iraq. A palpable tension shadowed the exhibit. The work reminded the College that the faculty of the Design Department has unassailable design and art credentials. While the practice of art informs the Department's distinctive teaching/learning methods, it is design theory that fuses concept and craft in the programs.

October 4 - 6 2004

Cornish design students created visionary sketches for a future Seattle based on cultural, social and environmental sustainability. The study area included South Lake Union, Westlake corridor and the Denny Triangle.

The objective of the project was to provide a context for exploratory, creative thinking, without boundaries, about how people could live and engage in their urban environment for decades to come.

The 2004 Art + Design BFA Exhibition was held from April 22 to May 7. The work in the show reflected a significant body of creative exploration from Graphic Design, Illustration and Interior Design students. Thesis projects ranged from the esoteric to the practical and asked questions of ethics, inclusion and exclusion, cultural and environmental sustainability, how we live and play, and how we experience space and information.
