Kofi Anang

Born in Pakro, in the Eastern region of Ghana, West Africa, Kofi Anang was awarded a scholarship to the University of Ghana by the institute of African Studies and graduated with honors as one of the most outstanding African dance and music students. Anang spent seven years with the Ghana National Dance Ensemble and performed throughout much of the world. After settling in Seattle in the early 1980s, his energy has been focused on his teaching at Cornish and his accompanying dance classes at Cornish and the Pacific Northwest Ballet.

Anang is also a composer and performer who continues to develop his music and dance ensemble Ocheami. His vision is to build community through music using the drum as the medium to bring people together and to build bridges within communities. Ocheami’s work centers on the community and is based on the seven principles of Kwanzaa: unity, self-determination, collective work, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.
