The Rez Abbasi Trio with the always-inventive Rez Abbasi (guitar), Mark Dresser (bass), and Satoshi Takeishi (drums).
Born in Karachi, Pakistan, removed at the age of four to relocate to Southern California, schooled at the University of Southern California and the Manhattan School of Music in jazz and classical music, as well as a pilgrimage in India under the tutorial of master percussionist, Ustad Alla Rakha, Rez Abbasi is a vivid synthesis of all the above stated influences and genres. Making New York home for the past 18 years, Abbasi has developed a unique sound both as a composer and an instrumentalist and is considered by many to be one of the foremost modern jazz guitar players the world over. He has honed his skills with performances through out Europe, Canada, the U.S., Mexico and India. He has performed and recorded with many jazz greats including, Grammy winner Ruth Brown, Peter Erskine, Kenny Werner, Barre Phillips, Tim Hagans, Marc Johnson, Billy Hart, Marvin ‘Smitty’ Smith, Gary Thomas, Rick Margitza, Dave Douglas, DD Jackson, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Tony Malaby, George Brooks, Pandit Ronu Majumdar, Pandit Kadri Gopalnath, Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Marilyn Crispell, Greg Osby, Howard Levy and a host of others. Abbasi is musical director and producer for Indian/Canadian Juno award winning vocalist, Kiran Ahluwalia. Kiran’s 2008 recording, “Wanderlust” on the World Connection label, hit the top ten on the European world-music radio charts and also received top ten in Song- Lines Magazine. The group travelled extensively throughout Europe, performing at the London Jazz, Paleo and Sfinks festivals. Abbasi also plays an integral role in two of saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa’s award winning groups, The Indo-Pak Coalition (Innova) and Kinsmen (PI). Kinsmen placed in twenty top-ten lists for 2008. As a result, Abbasi was interviewed by NPR’s “All Things Considered,” Rolling Stone magazine India and featured in the New York Times. The Indo-Pak Coalition recently performed at many festivals including the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Newport Jazz Festival. Abbasi can also be heard as a member of saxophonist Dave Pietro’s Chakra Group (Challenge Records), Sandro Dominelli trio among many others.
Mark Dresser has been actively performing and recording solo since 1983. At the core of his music is an artistic obsession and commitment to expanding the sonic and musical possibilities of the double bass through the use of unconventional amplification and extended techniques. His solo works include the DVD/CD/booklet triptich Guts: Bass Explorations, Investigations, and Explanations (2010) and CDs UNVEIL (2006) and Invocation (1994) feature the music evolving out of this research. A chapter on his extended techniques, “A Personal Pedogogy,” appears in the book, ARCANA (Granary Press). Dresser has written two articles on extended techniques for The Strad magazine: “Double Bass Harmonics” (October 2008) and an “Introduction to Multiphonics” (October 2009). Dresser presented a lecture/demonstration titled “Discover, Develop, Integrate: Techniques Revealed” at the 2009 International Society of Bassists convention, where he curated a New Music Summit featuring lectures, performances, and panel discussions on improvisation and contemporary music performance. Satoshi Takeishi has appeared on over seventy-five recordings including those by Latin giants Nestor Torres, Ray Barretto, Hector Martignon and Eliane Elias. He has also performed with Laszlo Gardony, Badal Roy, Erik Friedlander, Cantor, Sasha Argov, Colombian saxophonist Antonio Arnedo, Paul Winter, Antony Braxton, Theo Bleckmann, Ben Monder, Joel Harrison and Rob Brown. Satoshi's roots are deep and can be found working with Marc Johnson, Eddie Gomez, Randy Brecker, Dave Liebman, Mark Murphy, Herbie Mann, and the Toshiko Akiyoshi Big Band. His unique style incorporates percussion and electronics with his traditional drum set.
