Letter from Chair, Grant Donesky
Design is irrepressibly expansive and promiscuously inclusive. Its capacity for relevance is essentially limitless. As such, it is the goal of the Cornish Department of Design to prepare flexible designers who possess both broad and specific skills. In this, we are deliberately, actively, aligned with the tradition of craft. Where this tradition has been lost — perhaps eclipsed by the tools themselves
— we endeavor to restore an appreciation of craft to creative practice. But it is also our goal to educate designers into both broad and specific knowledge, and to
nurture experience.
Our alignment with the past and engaged sensitivity to emerging realities underwrites our belief in current and future designers. We are profoundly invested in the generations of citizen-designers to come.
I invite you to witness these commitments in our BFA Show and to join with us in celebrating the achievements of our students. This is the capstone exhibit for Seniors in our three concentrations: Interior Design, Motion Design and Visual Communication. Students have worked closely with faculty advisors, their work has been submitted to both peer critique and external review, and the excitement and expectations have mounted throughout the term. On behalf of the whole Cornish community, I am delighted to extend our congratulations to our Seniors.

Growing up I was told that I'm overly observant with a high attention to detail. As a designer, I value the research, the process of designing, and development of my work. My work displays simplicity, balance, craftsmanship and "less is more." My inspirations come from experiences, the beauty in the simplest things in life, and other artists.

For myself, it begins and ends with emotion. Capturing it and conveying it. I believe that in no other medium are the opportunities for expressing emotion as varied and expansive as in motion design. It is a medium between all others. A unique place where the skills of a designer, musician, painter and even performer, can all have value. Give a statue time and he will dance. Give him sound, and he will sing. The opportunities for expression are endless.

My design manifesto is "The Same But Different." People like what is familiar. It fosters acceptance and comfort. Yet, there must be an element that is unexpected and interesting to create a new experience. My project uses this formula, which manifests as retail that we are accustomed to, but is different because it gives back to the community and environment. Creating visuals that promote social awareness and growth challenge and inspire me as a designer.

Small Horse Studio is the creative home of illustrator Gaelyn Woltz and graphic designer Trevor Basset. We focus on hand screen-printing gig posters for music venues in Seattle and beyond, in addition to all forms of art, print and design work.
Posters have been a great way to get our work into the community, and we'd like to continue to be involved there, while also trying new things — being creative wherever we can, embarking on new careers, and maintaining Small Horse as a positive outlet.

Bringing characters to life through animation is the most rewarding thing I could ever do. I want to be an animator.
I am eager to join a game, motion graphics or visual effects studio where I can learn from professionals and continue to do work.
To join such a vibrant community of creative people is going to be an awesome experience.
This is only the beginning.

(Art)ifact is the culmination of an investigation into how Native American artifacts and contemporary works of art are presented to the public in museum and gallery settings. Many of these objects end up merely representing examples of "otherness" to the dominant American society which has little direct understanding of its indigenous peoples. This project approaches the issue by providing emotional context for Native art and artifacts through an experiential installation rather than the design of an educational museum exhibit in the Western tradition.

As artists and designers, our main objective is to entertain our audience in some way and elicit an emotional response from the viewer or listener. Like the range of different reactions to art, there is a range of different types of art and design. As a designer I like to experiment with tradition while creating something that is unique to my style. I also like to play on pop culture and push the boundaries of pop art. Like the massive expanse that is the galaxy in which we reside, so are the limitless possibilities of the imagination.

I am Costa Rican, but I was born in Seattle. I've seen the coffee fields on tropical country sides and drank Seattle's best. A blending of the two worlds is who I am, designing is what I do.

I used to make myself happy by drawing on my twin sister. I soon discovered that that did not make people happy — in fact, I learned that they did not enjoy scrubbing permanent marker from their daughter's skin until it was bright pink. Now I have control over those toddler urges, and I make things that make me happy as well as making other people happy. It's a pretty sweet deal.

I believe that layers make everything in life more interesting — people, poetry, a wedding dress, a winter bed. In design, it's the layers that give each piece character and soul — the unique mix of colors and elements. The way you choose to put it all together. Sometimes it's part of a well devised plan and everything works perfectly. Other times, it's pure improvisation and the most spontaneous combinations become the most beautiful. Either way, it's about building on what you have, following your instincts and letting things unfold naturally — just like life.

Animation is my life! I'm amazed by a drawing coming alive, developing a personality, and capturing the audience's hearts. It is my personal goal to create with my animations a sense of childhood wonder and delight in every person who views them. For me, it is a never ending battle to capture that feeling of limitless possibility and fearlessness we all had as kids.

When I use my hands to form my work, I feel connected with it. I like knowing how everything works and why. My thesis is as much an exploration of my abilities to fabricate as it is an exploration of design existing off the printed page. I don't believe design is or can be isolated to a two dimensional medium. It is merely reduced and represented in a format that is easily consumed. What I found worth exploring is a person's ability to consume material placed before them rather than willingly swallowed.

Label Me is a project that explores how a community derives judgment and stereotype from appearance. We are often judged, even in subtle or fleeting ways, based simply on our style, age, and body composure. In addition to its focus on social exploration, this work also examines how language and words change connotation depending on surrounding context.

This has been a journey about building my own voice and letting it speak through my work. By being free in my explorations of form, I have discovered forms that have the freedom to move. The transition from one state to another alters the mood and experience of these spaces, changing them from a static object to a dynamic form.

The purpose of a power transformer is to take high voltage electricity and to make it useable, just like the job of an artist is to observe, and to translate their observations into something intriguing and understandable. As an artist, I'm energized by depth, complexity and layers of meaning and am ready to transform some high voltage ideas.
