My project consists of scenes I’ve illustrated from the Grimm Brothers’ fairytale, The Three Spinsters. In the story, a teenage girl defies her mother’s (and society’s) expectations by refusing to spin. Everyone believes she is lazy, but through an ultimately fortunate series of events, she ends up at the queen’s castle with the queen believing she is an expert at spinning. The queen says the girl can have her son for a bridegroom when she spins three rooms full of flax. The girl accomplishes this, marries the prince but never touches a spinning wheel.

In my piece, The Three Spinsters and I, I’ve rewritten the original story from the girl’s perspective, giving her autonomy as well as soul.

Through my art I have an opportunity to share with people who I am and what exists within me. I like to evoke a sense of magic and possibility, connecting with my audience in a way that helps them remember things they may have forgotten.
