“America's core cultural reference has recently recognized tattooing as a well-established art form that, over the last three decades, has undergone dramatic changes.” (Hogan Levins-Time Magazine)
Like any medium of visual expression, I believe tattoos are another beautiful and unique way of signifying what we all ultimately desire: individuality. Irezumi, Japanese tattoos, have always been a boundless influence on my style of work. It vividly describes my profound passion and aspiration for art. After surrendering to the technique, it consumed me, leading me from hobby to art.
Not only does irezumi articulate the ideal of perfectionism, it also reveals the amount of detail, aggressive representation, intensity, fluidity and, most importantly, its ability to tell a story. This process of collaborating elements provides me with the opportunity to explore the duality of symbolism and metaphor that tattoos so powerfully possess. I find it important in understanding the value of lines because it integrates dynamic structure and emphasis in form.
In using this technique as a new avenue towards illustration, I intend to create a modern way of expression; that any story can be told through the art of tattoos.
