Magic, in the medieval sense of the word, is a symbol for a real magic we have all experienced. Any emotion or inspiration that empowers or transforms us is magic, and we have a tendency to forget that. Fantasy and Science-Fiction serve the same purpose as myths. They open a door to a belief in something more than dishwashers, and taxes, and 401k plans. Riding an armored unicorn into battle against winged, black-skinned demons may seem impossible (and it is, of course), but space-travel would have seemed impossible to someone in the 1700s, and it may seem impossible for you to realize your dreams. My point is not that you should start trying to genetically engineer a unicorn or study the martial vulnerabilities of flying demon hordes. My point is simply that believing in the impossible leads to accomplishing the extraordinary.
