Registration Opens for Summer at Cornish

Cornish invites students to spend the summer honing audition and portfolio pieces, making new strides in dance, learning from renowned musicians and diving into theater.

Registration is now open for places at Summer at Cornish, the college’s program for young artists commencing the first week of June.

Cornish College of the Arts has traditionally offered some sort of summer program — in fact the school was a pioneer in this area — but the offering at the college has been rapidly expanding. It now is able to offer students of wide-ranging interests and ages a place to learn in its Summer at Cornish program. According to Alison Staplin, summer and external programs manager, students as young as 3 and as old as 18 will find an environment where they can choose to have fun experimenting with art, do serious work in intensive study programs, or just about anything in between.

For students 15-18 years of age, Summer at Cornish can provide a “pre-college” experience, right down to living in a college dormitory; students can be in residence at Cornish for the duration of their chosen program. It is an enriching experience. Being able to provide residence allows the program to attract young people from all over the world; about 40 percent of students are from outside the area. Though it’s not a camp, really, Summer at Cornish was touted as “Best Summer Camp for Teens” by Seattle Magazine. With all the resources of an arts college at their disposal, Ms. Staplin says that students can “come and be part of a community.”

“Summer at Cornish is unique because it offers young artists the ability to completely immerse themselves in a supportive artistic community for a concentrated period of time,” continues Alison Staplin. “Young artists can experiment with new disciplines and/or hone existing talents while working among dedicated peers. Students are guided by talented faculty and staff who devote their time and knowledge to helping each artist develop and grow individually. The students who attend our programs describe them as life changing but fun – the perfect combination for a summer program in a truly beautiful city!”

Sumer at Cornish 2013 programs offer studies in four basic areas: Art & Design, Music, Dance and Theater. Music runs from June 19 to August 16, Dance from June 3 to August 30, and both Theater and Art & Design from July 8 to August 9.
