Cornish Dancemakers in National Spotlight
: Catherine Cabeen and Company.
Seattle Times IDs alums Catherine Cabeen, Kate Wallich and Amy O’Neal, faculty members Wade Madsen and Deborah Wolf, as players on the national dance scene.
Michael Upchurch, Seattle Times arts writer, catalogued the success of local dancers and choreographers in his article of November 25 “Seattle dancemakers claim a spot on national stage.” A surprising number of those he chronicled have a Cornish pedigree; Catherine Cabeen [DA’07] (pictured), Kate Wallich [DA ’10] and Amy O’Neal [DA ’99] are graduates of the dance department and Wade Madsen and Deborah Wolf serve on the Cornish faculty.
Upchurch recognizes the Cornish connection in his article. He quotes Velocity Dance Center’s Tonya Lockyer, “‘When dancers want to go and kneel at the feet of icons, they go to New York, dancers who come to Seattle, by contrast, come here “‘because they want to cut their own path.’” He then goes on to add, “That applies to dancers who stay here after emerging from local arts schools (primarily Cornish College of the Arts and the University of Washington) …”
Catherine Cabeen Company premieres Fire! at On the Boards January 17–20, 2013. CCC notes that Fire! is a collaborative, evening-length work celebrating the life and work of New Realist sculptor Niki de Saint Phalle.
Kate Wallich’s company The YC features the Rauschenberg Residency this coming January at The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, Captiva, Fla. “The YC is a multidisciplinary dance/performance company founded by Director Kate Wallich with Co-Director Lavinia Vago in 2010. The YC examines and comments on pop/hip culture by means of cinematic structuring, synthesized sound, and a clean architectural movement vocabulary.”
