Artists to Talk at Cornish

Cornish is hosting two talks: Jeffry Mitchell on his work and a panel discussing women artists and the influence of John Berger and Laura Mulvey.

In the next week, Cornish College of the Arts plays host to two events meant to draw the visual arts into focus.
First up is Women and the Visual: The Influence of John Berger and Laura Mulvey. Cornish College of the Arts joins the Seattle Art Museum in a celebration of great art by women with a community discussion: Women and the Visual: The Influence of John Berger and Laura Mulvey. Forty years after the publication of seminal works by John Berger and Laura Mulvey, a panel of Seattle artists considers the influence of their thinking on women as both subjects and objects of art. Please join us for this special lunchtime discussion, as part of Cornish’s Sustenance series.

The distinguished panel includes Sharon Arnold, artist, curator and writer; Michelle Dunn Marsh, artist; Amanda Manitach, artist and writer; and Steve Sewell, artist. Jenifer Ward, Interim Provost, Cornish College of the Arts will act as moderator.

Women and the Visual is one component of an unprecedented set of exhibitions and programs showcasing women artists hosted by the Seattle Art Museum.

The panel takes place Friday, November 16, in the 7th floor Board Room, Cornish campus, 1000 Lenora Street, from Noon - 1 pm. This event is free.

Just after the weekend, the public is encouraged to return to the 7th floor Board Room for a Neddy at Cornish Artist Talk. Featured is Jeffry Mitchell, who is the subject of the current Henry Art Gallery exhibition, Like a Valentine: The Art of Jeffry Mitchell, on view through January 27, 2013, curated by Sara Krajewski. Mitchell will speak on his work and practice. (Pictured is Mitchell’s “Hello Bear Shelf”)

Mitchell is a 2009 recipient of a Joan Mitchell Grant and The Stranger Genius Award. Jeffry Mitchell received his MFA in Printmaking from the Tyler School of Art, Temple University, Philadelphia in 1988. Mitchell is represented by Pulliam Gallery, Portland, OR and Ambach & Rice, Los Angeles, CA.

The Neddy at Cornish is pleased to announce this second in a series of artist talks featuring past recipients of the Neddy Artist Fellowship.

The Neddy at Cornish Artist Talk: Jeffry Mitchell is Monday, November 19, noon to 1 pm
1000 Lenora Street, 7th Floor Boardroom. This event is free.
