157 graduates participated in the ceremonial conferral of the Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music degrees and Artist Diploma in Music in front of more than 1400 audience members.
Honorary degrees were awarded to pianist and host of NPR show, From the Top, Christopher O’Riley, collage and multimedia artist, Betye Saar, and artist, designer and technologist, Chris Csikszentmihalyi, who also delivered the commencement address. Theater graduate, Sydney Tucker, was the 2012 student speaker. Dance graduate, Sarah Butler, performed a dance solo, Memory is Parallax, and Music graduates, Steve O’Brien and Greg Smith performed O’Brien’s original composition, Summit.
Candidates, faculty and dignitaries entered to a baroque processional performed by adjunct faculty, Ingrid Mathews, Kris Kwapis, Byron Schenkman, and Nancy Whittaker. The recessional with Africa dancing and drumming was led by faculty members, Kofi and Amma Anang.
