TH171 Text Analysis for Actors

Cornish Library
Research Guide for Raisin in the Sun Oral Report

1. Cornish Library Resources

  • TH171 Class Reserves. Go to the Class Reserves search page and type in "th 171" to find your list of Class Reserve   titles. You can ask for these at the library circulation desk.

2. Web Resources

Before going on Google or Yahoo try some of these sites to help anchor your   search. Get ideas for names, places, events to search later on Google.

3. Newspapers

4. Journals and Magazines

  • ProQuest This is an online index to journal, magazine, and newspaper articles. Coverage is from roughly 1988 to the present. It has many full-text articles you can print or email to yourself.

  •
  • Jet magazine.

Jet magazine. 1950’s back-issues available through Google Books. Jet is a perfect resource for a national overview of popular culture, arts and politics from the perspective of a 100% black owned publication. It is also published in Chicago and includes Chicago news and commentary.

Life magazine. 1950’s back-issues available through Google Books. Excellent source for overall current events and cultural reporting. Great picture source.

  • Ebony magazine
  •

Ebony magazine. Unfortunatly, online back-issues for Ebony only go back as far as November 1959, so it may not be as useful for researching life in the 1950’s. However, since Raisin in the Sun wasn’t produced until 1959, you can still find articles related to the play, the actors, and Lorraine Hansberry in issues from the 1960’s and beyond. Published by the same publishing firm as Jet, but with more in-depth articles and more pictorial content.
